Allergen and Nutrition in Foodservice

Understanding allergens and nutrition

Understanding allergens and nutritional information is crucial for protecting consumers, especially those with food allergies. Accurate labeling helps prevent allergic reactions and ensures that consumers can make informed dietary choices. As a responsible wholesale food distributor, we prioritise the safety and well-being of our customers.

Partnership with the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation

We are proud to partner with Natasha’s Research Foundation, working together to promote awareness and improve food safety standards. This partnership is dedicated to enhancing the safety and transparency of food products, particularly focusing on preventing allergic reactions.

Trevors Foodservice, a leading wholesale food supplier and member of a leading foodservice buying group, has entered into a significant 3 year partnership with The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation. This collaboration aims to support the foundation’s objectives, including the Natasha Clinical Trial, marking us as one of the first foodservice distributors to partner with the foundation. This partnership will raise awareness, compassion, and crucial funds to help make food allergy history.

Natasha's Law: What You Need to Know

Natasha’s Law, enacted in the United Kingdom, mandates clear and accurate allergen labeling on all pre-packaged foods sold directly to consumers. Named after Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who tragically lost her life due to a severe allergic reaction, this law aims to prevent similar incidents by providing transparent information about allergens in food products, this regulation is essential for wholesale food distributors.

This law aims to improve transparency and ensure that individuals with food allergies or intolerances can make informed choices about the products they purchase.

Key Requirements of Natasha's Law

  1. Clear Labeling: All pre-packaged foods must prominently display a list of ingredients, with allergens clearly highlighted, often in bold or a contrasting font.
  2. Specificity: Each allergen must be explicitly listed, including common allergens like nuts, milk, eggs, and gluten-containing grains, among others.
  3. Consistency: The allergen information should be consistent across all packaging and clearly visible to consumers, enabling them to make informed choices.
  4. Preventive Measures: Businesses must take proactive steps to prevent cross-contamination and ensure that products labeled as ‘free from’ specific allergens are rigorously monitored and tested.

Allergen guidance

Allergens

Food businesses need to tell customers if any food they provide contain any of the listed allergens as an ingredient. Consumers may be allergic or have intolerance to other ingredients, but only the 14 allergens are required to be declared as allergens by food law.
